Establishing a Trust Economy With Your Teenager: Session I

Dear Parent,
Is today a struggle for you? I don’t mean just everyday issues. I mean, are you struggling with some aspect of your relationship with your teenager today? I would imagine that many of you are nodding your head, or rolling your eyes, or even allowing a few frustrated tears to gather. Do me a favor, would you? Look out of your nearest window. Did the sun rise today? Did you worry that it wouldn’t? Why not? Is it because one, you take it for granted or two, you completely trust God and know that the rising of the sun is fully dependent on Him? I would imagine it’s a little bit of both.

I just want to encourage you, the frustrated and weary mom, and you, the overwhelmed and weary dad. Our heavenly Father knows the frustration of raising children. He knows what it’s like to be ignored, disobeyed, and disrespected on every level! But there is one thing that God does that we need to take careful notice of! He fosters trust in His children through one very specific avenue. He never leaves us!

So many verses talk about the trustworthiness of God! But there is one that has always encouraged me, especially when dealing with teenagers! Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed!”

Now I know that you can’t make the sun rise for your teen, but you can create a trust with them by being there when they need you. It’s not always about fixing things for your teenager to make sure that all is right in their world. But it is about allowing your teen to have the confidence that no matter what they deal with you will be there as surely as the sun will rise!
